Cinnamon rolls over a fire-pit are a fun and simple treat while staying warm outside. All you need is a tube of store-bought cinnamon rolls and a few long sticks. Wrap the cinnamon roll around the stick and let the kids roast them in the fire. The kids can rotate as they cook, cool enough to handle, pop them off the sticks, dunk them in the icing and enjoy!  Be sure to teach and practice fire safety.

Scavenger hunts can focus on items that can be found in the outside, in the house, or in the neighborhood. You can find a lot of examples on Pinterest. Include things like pinecones, acorns, animal tracks, puddles, feathers, evergreens, etc. 

Give each child a flashlight or headlamp and head out on a Night hike of a well-known trail. Play follow the leader or enjoy a trust walk with eyes closed.  Take a minute to listen to the silence or the animals.  Make sure to dress appropriately and tell someone where you’ll be and when you’ll be back.

Free self-paced, six-session program is entirely online and uses the scientifically-proven ePREP platform. Provides online help in building intimacy, connecting, communicating.  Illinois couples who are married, engaged, or have been living together for at least six months can enroll. Early requests are encouraged. May also provide monetary incentives for participation in research. 
Dreambank Events
American Family Insurance has free online classes for both adults and kids.  Kids programs include field trips, crafts, and live speakers.  Adult programs have lots of fitness, business help, and well being programs.
​The Nature Institute (Godfrey): 
  • Homeschool Field trips for pk-12th grade. Programs are in 1.5 hour blocks, Tuesday-Friday throughout the school year.  There should be no more than a 4 year age gap for students. Groups should be no more than 15.  $6/student for at least $90 per program. Groups may choose to add a second program block in the afternoon at a discounted rate of $3 per student. 
  • Outdoor Adventure Kits (OAK): free to use at the preserve and beyond. Each kit contains scavenger hunts, bug boxes, binoculars, field guides, a map of TNI, a compass, instructions for use, and upcycled nature notebooks. The kits are recommended for ages 5+ . Each kit consists of a String Backpack, list of kit contents, 3 Laminated Scavenger Hunts, 3 Dry Erase Markers, 2 Bug Boxes, a Pair of Binoculars, Pocket Field Guides (one or more), a Small Nature Notebook and pencil for you to keep, Map of TNI, and a Compass.
  • Programs for all ages: Nature Babies, Knee High Naturalists, Messy Play Day, Discovery Nature Club, Field Guides, Outdoor EDventure Days, and Kids Nights Out.

Missouri Historical Museum (STL): 
  • Group Programs: guided Gallery + Classroom Programs last two hours: one hour in the gallery or galleries and one hour in the classroom.  All K–12 programs are FREE of charge. 
  • Monthly History Exploration Days: One Friday and Saturday a month, discover historical people and perspectives. Investigate history in FREE workshops, and have creative fun in craft room.
  • Teens Make History has two parts: The TMH Academy is a FREE museum studies workshop. Teens receive a $150 stipend for participating. TMH Apprenticeships are paid part-time jobs for teens. 
  • Pre-K (ages 2-6) and early childhood programs: last 90 minutes and include: storybooks, simple craft projects, and exploring a gallery.  Programs are available year-round on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
  • History Clubhouse, a FREE gallery especially designed for children to learn about St. Louis history. Children dress up in costumes, put on a puppet show, fish over the edge of a canoe, pull a steamboat whistle, and more!​

Adventures in Medicine & Science (STL): A youth community outreach program that provides health education and prevention information to students throughout the school year. With a combination of hands-on opportunities and auditorium presentations, students get a unique look at the human body. In addition, they offer summer workshops for middle and high school ages.

​Daysprings Academy (Maryland Heights, MO): offers enrichment classes on Fridays for families. Classes are in the performing arts, arts, science, and music. There is a sibling discount.

​LitShop (STL): provides FREE after school and summer programming for girls ages 10-15.  Girls work on exploring literature while creating.  This is done through book clubs, wood working, magazine creation, and much more.  By intentionally creating a supportive space where girls can take risks, explore creatively, build skills, and connect with peers, LitShop fosters leadership and confidence our builders can use through adolescence and early adulthood.

St. Louis BWorks (STL)
Has educational programs rooted in teamwork and responsibility.   Earn-a-bike is a 6-week hands-on course for students ages 8-17 who can ride a bike on their own.  Students learn bike maintenance and safety.  Upon course completion, students earn a refurbished bike, lock, and helmet.  Earn-a-computer is a 6-week course for students ages 8-17. Students work on learning various pieces of open source software and one day of hardware.  Upon course completion, students earn a refurbished computer.  Learn-to-ride is an 8-week course for students who cannot ride a bike.  The course covers the same materials as Earn-a-Bike, but in addition – they learn to ride.  Learn-to-ride is offered to students on the Program Mailing List. You must sign up for the list for your child to take this course. 

The Historic Daniel Boone Home (Defiance, MO)
Features the home of the legendary hero, Daniel Boone. The buildings include: homes, a carpenter’s shop, a mill, and the Old Chapel.  The Boone Home and Boonefield Village offer a glimpse into life on the Missouri frontier.  Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds of the park for free.  Visit Tours page or call the park at 636-798-2005 to learn about Tour opportunities. Pricing for guided tours of the Daniel Boone Home: Adult - $8. Senior (60+) - $6. Child (age 5–12) - $5.  Active/Retired Military and Children 4 and under are free.  
​Wild and Free Metro East: Meets on Tuesdays in Madison County. Aims to get kids exploring, connecting with, and loving nature while building community and friendship. Also hopes to share resources to better support each other. Feel free to stay afterward to do nature journaling together or identify treasures!

Wild and Free with Asher T: Meets on Fridays in Madison County. Created to get like minded, nature loving parents and children together to support each other and learn together. Parents chat while kids make friends and learn through play together. Runs year round.
Families work together to educate and socialize their children.  Parents are often asked to teach, volunteer, or pay for class supplies. Classes and activities are often during school hours.

​ARCH (Crestwood, Missouri): a Roman Catholic homeschool co-op that offers classes, field trips, celebrations, social gatherings, and service opportunities for PK-12 on Wednesdays, from September- December and February-April.

City Roots Homeschool Co-op (STL) offers secular classes and social opportunities to build a city-based, sustainable, and supportive community.  They teach exclusively from a secular perspective sand offer a welcoming space to families of all and no faiths.

The O’Fallon Early Learning Cooperative (O'Fallon) is a play-based, child-led, parent-supported approach to learning that supports children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. It is an alternative for families who wish to educate their young learners at home and an educational opportunity for parents who wish to supplement a formal educational program with at-home learning.  OFELCC is free and open to Metro-East Families.

Open Minds (Edwardsville): meets weekly on Tuesdays for enrichment classes, parent support, PE, field trips, park days, and community service opportunities for homeschooling families. K -12th grade.

Providence Fine Arts Center (Ferguson): Provides fine arts programs with a focus on God.

Riverbend Homeschooling Coop (Cottage Hills): meets weekly on Fridays from 10am-2pm for enrichment classes, parent support, PE, field trips, park days, and community service opportunities for homeschooling families. Pre K - 9th grade.

St. Louis Homeschool Network (STL):  a learning co-op with classes and field trips. Also offers park days, parties, a secular support group, and an information source for prospective homeschoolers.

Volunteers can help with answering wildlife calls via the 24-hour hotline, responding to calls, rescuing animals in need, providing critical care, transporting, providing in-home care, and more.

(Judging is optional.) The houses with the top three scores will move on to a final vote on our Facebook Page beginning on December 17th.

Fill a water balloon and add a few drops of food coloring. Let them freeze (either outside or in the freezer). Once frozen, pop the balloon and you’re left with a beautiful ice globe in the color of your choice. Take them outside to decorate or play.

Discover with water while spending some time in nature! Attach yarn to small water bottles filled with different colored water and let it drip down the yarn to created mixed color masterpieces. Hang the bottles in an easy to reach place and enjoy observing as the icicles grow!

Freeze water in different ice cube trays and tupperware. Add a few drops of food coloring. Leave them outside to freeze. Pop them out of their containers and get building with colored ice blocks!

Maple syrup snow candy is made with pure maple syrup and snow! First, carefully heat the syrup before pouring it hot into the snow to solidify. Adult supervision and necessary.

One simple recipe is to take sweetened condensed milk, and combine with clean snow. For a bit more excitement, combine 1 cup milk, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and 8 cups clean snow. Add food coloring, sprinkles, and fruit as your heart desires!

Give kids aluminum foil, tissues, popsicle sticks, paperclips, pencils, silverware, or other household items. Allow them to plan, design, and engineer a skier that can stand on skis and make it down a ski slope. Gets kids thinking about physics, engineering, elements, and design.

Hamel Giving Tree Provides a place at Hamel Village Hall for donated gifts to be picked up and dropped off. Drop toys into the box, volunteers will then collect, wrap, and place the gifts at the Tree.

Mid-Town Moms Helps children in shelters with Christmas toys. Local shelters and outreach programs provide the first name, age, gender and birthdate of the child in need. During Christmas we set up a store where parents can shop for their children free of charge. Each child will receive at least three gifts and stocking stuffers.

Great Lakes workshops

  • What: Ten 4th-12th grade teachers and non-formal educators will be selected to participate in a week-long  workshop aboard the United States Environmental Agency’s research vessel, R/V Lake Guardian.  Educators will set sail and conduct research alongside scientists. During the workshop, educators network and work in small teams with a scientist.  The workshops typically include two shore stops for educational field trips about locally relevant Great Lakes topics.
  • Why: This once-in-a-lifetime experience provides an opportunity for educators to participate in research, collaborate with scientists, establish relationships with other teachers, and bring home Great Lakes educational resources for use with their learners. 
  • Participants will be expected to adhere to any and all COVID-19 safety protocols required by the US EPA at the time of the workshops.
  • Cost? Stipend? Travel costs? Credits?: Travel stipends are provided to cover or offset the cost of participation. In most cases, all expenses are covered, with the exception of two dinners.
  • When:
    • Sunday, June 26- Saturday, July 2, 2022.
    • Friday, July- Thursday, July 14, 2022.
