Police Youth Academy
is a unique and exciting program developed to provide young boys and girls, ages 12 through 16, with a positive summer experience that is fun, challenging, and informative. The Youth Academy was founded on the principles of citizenship, responsibility, and knowledge. The Youth Academy will conclude with a graduation/awards banquet on Friday, June 17th, at 6:30 p.m. Applications will be accepted after March 6, 2023, on a first come first serve basis. Priority will be given to students attending Edwardsville Public or Parochial Schools. The applicants prior conduct will be taken into consideration. Space is limited to 25 participants. Each participant should anticipate bringing a sack lunch and a drink each day. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $75.00.
Intergenerational Orchestra
The Belleville Philharmonic society is hosting a summer intergenerational orchestra. This is a great time for youth and adults to come together to make music. Ideally, musicians should have two years of experience on their instruments.
The summer session will start on Monday, June 5th at the Belleville Philharmonic Hall - 116 North Jackson Belleville, IL. The concert will be on Sunday, July 23rd. For more information, contact byo@bellevillephilharmonic.org. It is recommended that students have two to three years of experience on their instrument and can read music. We have a soft grade level of 6th grade because that is when most school band or orchestra students have had two years of experience. However, some younger students have been playing for several years. We want to make sure that they can keep up and don't get overwhelmed. Musicians can register online or request a paper registration form.

SIUE Summer Writing Camp
is presented through the Department of English Language and Literature, the Writing Day Camp offers intensive and practical development in basic writing skills in combination with a full and vigorous recreational program.
Students are grouped according to their grade level in school, with groups averaging about 10 students each. Total enrollment is limited to 72 student-campers per session. The camp director is assisted by a staff comprised of area elementary and secondary school and University teachers and recreational counselors. The adult-student ratio in the Writing Camp is about 1 to 10.
The writing sessions of the camp concentrate on intensive practice in the development and expression of ideas. The objective of the program is the development of skill in the articulation of thought in the sentence, the paragraph, and the short composition, as well as, by means of collaborative effort, in such creative forms as poetry, drama, and fiction. Instruction in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and other basics of language usage is provided on an individual basis as needed, but not as an objective of the program. Students at all grade levels use computers extensively in the composition process, but they do not need prior experience with computers to do well in the program.
The sole requirement for admission to the Writing Camp is the desire to learn to write well.
The beautiful natural setting of its 2,600-acre campus makes Southern Illinois University Edwardsville ideal for a summer recreational program for youths. Student-campers can participate in a wide range of recreational activities that stimulate their imagination and develop their physical skills: swimming, volleyball, bowling, and nature exploration, among others.
Writing instructors and recreational counselors try to ensure that student-campers view the writing and recreational parts of the camp as one continuous learning experience.

Camp Roehr
is a seven-day residential camp for
children between the ages of six through seventeen
years old who have epilepsy. Camp Roehr was originally named in honor of Mr.
Tony Roehr. Mr. Roehr was a strong advocate in St.
Clair County, Illinois, for those with developmental
disabilities throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. Tony
was very active by serving on the boards of several
disability organizations in St. Clair County. He also
served as the director for Advocates for the
Developmentally Disabled in the 1980’s. Mr. Roehr
had a close relationship with the Epilepsy Foundation
for many years. Sadly, St. Clair County lost a great
advocate when Mr. Roehr died in 1991. The Epilepsy
Foundation of Greater Southern Illinois wanted to
honor his memory. Thus, the annual camp for
children with epilepsy was re-named Camp Roehr.
Camp Roehr gives young people with special
needs a variety of opportunities to focus on their
strengths. With a staff of caring, qualified counselors and
medical support personnel, the children are able to
make new friends and have a great time in a safe,
supportive environment. Held at Trout Lodge in Potosi, Mo. www.ymcaoftheozarks.org
